LUM DWELLERS

Slum dwellers are a group of very poor and socially disadvantaged people inhabiting a heavily populated urban area. Their homes are often informal settlements built with temporary or make-shift building materials.

Reality Situation of Third World Slum Dwellers

Slum children are more likely to die from water-borne and respiratory illnesses due to a inadequate
access to clean and safe drinking water.

Women living in slums are more likely to contract HIV.

Slum children are less likely to be enrolled in primary school than their urban counterparts.

Slums are " breeding grounds " for social problems such as crime, drug addiction, alcoholism and suicide.

Slum dwellers exhibit high rates of disease due to inadequate access to sanitation and other
infrastructure, overcrowding, malnutrition, and lack of basic health care.

Many live in very narrow alleys that do not allow vehicles ( like ambulances and fire engines ) to pass in
case of emergencies.

The lack of services such as routine garbage collection allows rubbish to accumulate in huge quantities.

The low socioeconomic status of the dwellers often lead them into desperation and crime.
