Russia Intern 2015
My internship with Humanitarian Affairs is one of the most memorable events in my life. It has been four years now but I still feel the impact of this experience.
Doing this internship and living in Southeast Asia has taught me so many things. I’ve never lived in Asian country for such a long time and it was eye opening. This was a year of growth and personal development that I could have never expected. A vast, enormous world of opportunities, a world of serving others and a world of incredible people opened up for me. I feel so blessed and thankful for the time I spent there.
For me, it was a very sudden decision to leave Russia to stay in Thailand. I was a little scared and didn’t know what to expect. But I knew at that time that I needed to do something. I was working a job that I didn’t like and it didn’t take me anywhere. So, I’ve packed my things and headed for an internship with Humanitarian Affairs in Bangkok.
The very first morning I woke up in another country, I felt that it was all worth it. I felt so empowered and enlightened. The team was amazing and it felt like a dream to stay in a tropical country, which was very different from snowy Russia. Still, it wasn’t about lying on the beach. It was all about hard work, and we could all feel it when we started our journey towards the University Scholars Leadership Symposium. It felt almost impossible that the team of 11 could prepare and launch such a big event but we did!
We proved that hard work pays off. I acquired a positive mindset and saw that growth comes from adversity. The biggest joy was talking to USLS delegates and seeing how happy they were. The conference provided many opportunities for betterment, both for them and for all of us.
I still recall these beautiful memories and have no regrets deciding to head to Thailand for the internship. To anyone who is thinking about changing your life — don’t be afraid to go for it. Everything you need is already inside you.
